The Temple of Ephesus on the Ionian coast built in the 10th century BC has withstood time. The city is known as Selçuk in modern-day Turkey and continues to be famous thanks to the Temple of Artemis which attracts many pilgrims even to this day. The entire site is home to an amphitheatre with a capacity of over 25,000 spectators, an agora (marketplace) and an array of baths and gymnasiums. It is also an outstanding example of a Roman port city with a sea channel and a harbour basin. Silk, spices, traditions and money flowed through as it stood on the old silk road connecting Asia to Europe, earning its permanent location on Turkey’s banknotes.
