The ancient, pre-hispanic meso-American city of Teotihuacan lies about 40 kms. from the nation’s present capital. The city became the largest, most populated and multi-ethnic centre around the 1st century, one of the early precursors to our modern cities. Featured on this banknote is the Temple of Quetzalcoatl (Feathered Serpent). This six-level step pyramid is the largest in the cultural complex built in the pre-Columbian ‘talud-tablero’ style. Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec deity of culture and literature decorates the left side of the note. Mexico has 35 inscribed properties on the world heritage list and perhaps the only nation to flaunt these sites across all of its banknote series until date.
