The Seowon, Korean Neo-Confucian Academies, comprises of nine seowons from the period between the 16th and 17th centuries. It is an exceptional testimony to cultural traditions associated with Neo-Confucianism in the form of educational and social practices that are still prevalent. The determining factors for the establishment of the seowon was the association with acclaimed scholars as well as the landscape with locations near nature while enriching the mind and body. Pavilion style buildings as can be seen on this banknote, facilitated these connections to the landscape. Featured on it is the Dosan Seowon, Confucian Academy in Andong, important in the cultural fabric of the nation as showcased by its banknotes.
