The Piazza del Duomo in Pisa houses four masterpieces of medieval architecture – the cathedral, the baptistery, the bell tower, fondly known as the 'Leaning Tower' and the cemetery. They were built between the 11th and 14th centuries within close proximity of each other, forming a unique collection of monuments. They reflect a decisive stage in the history of medieval Christian architecture that they have become a reference point for studies related to the Pisan Romanesque style. Also, famous as being Galileo Galilei’s hometown, most of Pisa’s architecture was financed thanks to its maritime importance and contributions since it was an important trading port that earns a permanent position on the nation’s money.
