Money Talks - “Men at War”
Money has been used as an effective medium of propaganda ever since its modern origin of coins and banknotes. The images of war, rulers, victories and freedom-struggles are blatantly emblazoned. Currency imagery of over 200 countries revealed military illustrations were almost entirely gendered; displaying uniformed men; either in combat or conquest!
This paper showcases the role of currency imagery; a brash example from popular visual-culture; that stands witness to the “men at war,” the construction, interpretation and impact of their masculinities, identities and cultures; whilst acknowledging that money is not merely a medium of exchange but a medium of communication.
