China  : 1 Yuan, 1980 ; Paper : Reverse ; size : 140 mm x 63 mm

Holding a permanent spot as ‘one of the 7 wonders of the world’ the Great Wall of China needs no introduction. Featuring on the 1-Yuan’s reverse is the Mutianyu section close to the capital, Beijing. The wall is not a single structure but a series of fortifications that contribute to the entire ‘Great Wall’. Built over various sections and across many years, the earliest accounts point to the 7th century. Defence being the primary goal, the wall also served its role in border control posts for exchange and movement of people, goods and taxes. It continues to be part of those connections of economic exchange. Sometimes claimed to be seen even from space, its clearly seen across China’s monetary gallery.
